Appalachian Apparitions...

I stumbled across this today and it sure takes me back. I've been thinking a lot about my mountains lately. It seems that when the fall of the year rolls around and the woods are on fire, I get a yearning to go home.

These is where I come from, this is my heritage, these are my people. I didn't know this old feller, but I know thousands just like him.

A friend directed me to this photographer; Shelby Lee Adams, who has dedicated a good deal of his life capturing the true essence of mountain culture. Memories run over me like rushing water when I look at his work. My mind flashes pictures from the past in front of me of faces I knew long since gone but still alive in his subjects. I think you'll them, too.

Kentucky Dreamer said...: I really enjoyed this and the link, too. I haven't been where you been, never professed to live that life but even so, this took me back to someplace I once enjoyed quite a bit.

We encourage writers of all skill levels to submit work here. The only way to get better at the craft of writing is to practice it.

If you are an exceptional writer, requiring little or no editing, you may be offered a position as a staff writer and can forego the submissions process.

Code of the Hills

The rules of behavior here at the Appalachian Writers are fairly simple and straightforward:

1 - No abuse or attacks on any contributor or guest will be tolerate. This is the first and only warning on that account.

2 - Nothing of an obscene or pornographic nature will be tolerated here. We want this to be a place our children and grandmothers can come to as well. We are not teetotlers and will allow a certain levity in language for stories, poems and comments, but please just use good taste and discretion.

3 - Please feel free, in fact encouraged, to comment on the pieces our contributors have offered for your reading enjoyment. If you have a criticism on a piece of work, that is fine, too. We are thick-skinned up to a point. Just make sure that your critiques are done in a way to encourage improvement in the way we write for you and not just mean-spirited poor-mouthing.

That ought to just about do it. Just behave like you would if your momma was watching, she just might be. You know how sneaky they can be!
